Hi I am Barb I have been in the fitness industry for over 30 yrs. Health and Fitness is a way of life for me and my family. I qualified as a massage therapist over 20 years ago and then retrained myself in 2002, getting a Diploma in Personal Training which included in the curriculum Sports Massage and Injury therapy. This has equipped me with a real knowledge of the human anatomy.
I started my own business Body Sense in October 2002 and as a sole trader have been trading ever since. I gained a Diploma in Personal Training in 2002 with Premier Global becoming a fully qualified Personal Trainer and Sports Massage Therapist, Fitness Instructor to level 3 which enables me to take classes in circuits and Ftball. I can do Body Massage, Sports Massage Therapy and Gym instruct. I qualified with The British School of Yoga to become a Hatha Yoga Teacher in 2010 for adults adding on yoga for Children in 2011 which means I can teach 3 to 5yrs, 5 – 8yrs, 8 -11yrs and 11 to teens, also being able to teach yoga to Mums and their babies. Then qualifying as a Fitness Pliates teacher with Choreography2Go in 2010. I then did a diploma in Vegetarian & Vegan Nutritional Therapy in 2012. This is to endorse a holistic approach I have to each client.
Why you decided to work at a gym
I decided to work at a gym as it was the most natural place for me to be. I have always been into fitness one way or another, either training with my late husband, for myself or when the kids were younger kicking a ball about in the garden or playing netball or basketball. Being a Sports therapist and a class teacher the two just go hand in hand in the gym environment.
What inspires you?
I get my inspiration from nature, how plants, flowers, animals and of course humans can overcome diversity and continue to grow and prosper. Seeing a student come to hatha yoga for the first time with great or no expectations and seeing them achieve asanas (postures) which they thought they would never achieve the smile on their faces gives me the inspiration to set goals for myself too.
What do you do at active4less?
I am at the gym as a Therapist 3 days a week Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays as I use the therapy room there. I also teach 2 yoga classes there and have recently started up my Fitness Pilates class too. When I am in I am always on hand to help out be it behind the desk, serving answering the phone, chatting to the members regarding their training, offering advice, chatting to the other staff members as we are one big happy family.
What makes you smile?
Many things, hearing the laughter of a baby, the giggle of young children, the belly laugh of adults, especially my family when we are all together reminiscing or they are trying to do the hatha yoga postures I set them. The sunshine on a spring day the promise of all that is new to come.
What is your favourite holiday place?
Venice no hesitation there, it is the most amazing city I have ever visited it is just quite unique.
What is your favourite food?
Ooh not easy but of course it will be vegan and it has to be my home made aubergine au gratin (with vegan cheese of course) not a food as such more a dish I guess. But I do love my food and although many people think being a vegan limits the food you can have you should come round to my house sometime there is so much to eat.
What is your idea of a perfect day?
Spending it with my family, my sons their wives and my 8 grandchildren!! Can’t beat it especially in the summer when we can all be out in the garden enjoying the sunshine playing games, eating or just sitting and talking.
What are your favourite 3 artists?
Are we talking painters, sculptures or music? I’m guessing it is music. Well top of the list is the late great David Bowie, a very close second John Lennon and Michaelangelo I know he is a sculpturer if that is a word and not a musician.
What are your favourite 3 movies?
Not easy but I will go for Gone with the Wind, My Beautiful Launerette and Slumdog Millionaire. Not fair we can only say 3.
Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Parents Unknown (A Ukranian Childhood) (Ok my grandfather wrote this one so of course it has to be there) anything by Oscar Wilde, Thomas Hardy or D H Lawrence.
What is your favourite type of exercise?
Hatha Yoga of course, it is just so amazing so many people think that you just sit there cross legged and ummmm but it oh so much more than that.
What is your favourite motivational fitness saying?
It is not a competition or an endurance test, it’s not the distance it is about the direction.
How do you motivate yourself?
I am very lucky that I am a very motivated person probably one of the reasons that I teach and am a Personal Trainer. But having lost my husband many years ago I learnt to just take one step at a time. If you go too fast you will trip and fall. But if you do you just get yourself up brush yourself down and start all over again.
Your favourite life quote? I have two and have to put both of them. “Tomorrow is another day” and “I won’t worry about that today I will worry about it tomorrow. Oooh just thought of another, “Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday”
